Opportunity School at Bethany
Teacher: Kristen Huff
What is Opportunity School?
Opportunity School at Bethany (a.k.a. Opportunities) uses the Opportunity Program
Model® developed by the seasoned professionals at Opportunity Schools. Our Opportunities
teacher holds an Education Specialist teaching credential, is trained in multiple intervention
curriculums such as the Linda Mood Bell programs, and is highly qualified in teaching students
with special needs. Our satellite program is for students who learn a little differently than the
average general education student.
Opportunities students receive instruction in the same core curriculum as general education
students, but in a small-group setting that is more suited to their individual learning styles and
needs. They also receive supplemental instruction and activities designed to increase fluency and
comprehension in reading.
Students enrolled in the Opportunities program receive pull-out services for approximately
45 minutes, four days a week. While their class works on reading in a large group, Opportunities
students go work individually or in small groups with the Opportunities teacher. They focus on
building fluency and comprehension, which are the most basic reading skills necessary for success
in school.
Opportunities also provides individualized and small-group support in math and social skills
development, as needed by individual students.
What’s in the Opportunities Toolbox?
The most important tool in the Opportunities Toolbox is the individualized attention each
student receives during their pull-out sessions. Many of our students need more individualized
attention and to work at a pace and level that is appropriate for their individual needs. This is just
what our program offers.
Opportunities uses the same curriculum for reading instruction that is used in the general
education classrooms, Houghton Mifflin. The difference is that while using this curriculum we
teach to individual student’s needs, rather than to the generalized needs of a whole classroom or
grade level. Our goal is the same: students in Opportunities will become successful independent
learners. However, their journey towards success may take a different path.
We also use several supplemental programs alongside the core curriculum to target various
student learning needs. Seeing Stars (Linda Mood Bell) is used to target phonics and decoding
skills that are necessary for reading fluency. Some early readers also use Phonics for Reading to
practice applying the rules of phonics to reading. Visualizing and Verbalizing (Linda Mood Bell) is
used to target reading comprehension.
Another great tool in our toolbox is the computer-based learning we employ. Many
students thrive on technology as a method of practicing new skills. Opportunities students have
access to Lexia Reading and Symphony Math as additional skill builders.
How are students identified and enrolled in Opportunities?
When a student is struggling in the general education classroom and is consistently not
meeting grade-level standards, there are several steps taken. First we conduct an SST (Student
Success Team) meeting where the teachers and the family discuss the unique needs of the
student, what methods have already been tried, and what additional interventions should be used
to help them be successful. If the student does not show reasonable improvement after these
initial interventions have been implemented, then the student is referred for further assessment.
The administrator, teachers, and parents may then consider the student’s educational history,
standardized test scores, past and current report cards, current work samples, etc. If it is
determined that enrollment in Opportunities is an appropriate next step, the family will be asked
to fill out an application and an agreement will be signed that officially enrolls the student in the
Opportunities program.
Incoming students who already have an IEP or 504 Plan through a school district may
already qualify for Opportunities. Submit a copy of your student’s current IEP or 504 Plan along
with your enrollment application so that the administrator and teachers can plan accordingly to
meet your student’s needs before their first day of school.
There is a nominal fee added to the student’s tuition to cover the cost of this additional
support. It can be paid in advance for the whole year ($1,000), or it can be added to monthly
tuition bills ($100/month).
